Crab Mentality

Antonio M. Reyes

By Antonio M. Reyes

Here’s good news for Southern Leytenos who want to enroll in schools in Cebu to study nursing, but are worried about the high cost of living there. In the last board examination for nurses the students of the College of Maasin’s School of Nursing attained an impressive 83 percent passing rate.
It was a remarkable achievement since the board examination this year was considered one of the toughest. It was so difficult in fact that only 39 percent of the examinees passed. CM’s School of Nursing is only six years old and it’s already considered among the top ten learning institutions for nurses in the country.
The movers responsible for this sterling performance were Dean Miraluna Caturan and the faculty of CM’s School of nursing, CM President Dr. Miguel “Mike” Udtohan and College Chaplain Bishop Rizalino Taganas.
But there were others who worked behind the scene who deserve special mention, like Congressman Roger G. Mercado, who convinced then Commission on Higher education Chairman Carlito Puno to exempt the college from the moratorium on new nursing schools. And of course, Dr. Gloria Markines Reyes, who was then CM’s Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The bad news is that most of these nurses will serve here only until they can leave for “greener pastures” abroad.
This is what’s so sad about our country; we subsidize our skilled professionals and they end up pledging allegiance to the flag of another country that offer them more money. They send part of their earnings home of course, but when they can afford to, they bring their families with them.
This is the difference between scholars of the People’s Republic of China and those of the Philippines. Chinese scholars who study abroad return to their country, while ours junk their citizenship as fast as they can, and leave their country for good..
What we lack is Patriotism, but why even discuss the topic, when we can’t even agree on a national language that Luzonians, Visayans and Mindanaons will accept.
