Hazard maps almost completed

SAINT BERNARD - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has almost completed its Geo-hazard Mapping of 91 percent of the project’s target of 1,618 municipalities nationwide as of December 2009.
DENR Acting Secretary Eleazar Quinto said the mapping of 1,474 municipalities has been finished.

Geohazard maps identify areas that are landslide prone.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had directed the Mines and Geosciences Bureau and the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority in 2006 to conduct the National Geohazard Mapping and Assessment Program following the mega-landslide in Barangay Guinsaugon, Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte which killed more than 2,000 people.

He said priority was given to areas within the Eastern Seaboard, considered most prone to typhoons. The Mines and Geosciemces Bureau has identified the top 10 provinces prone to landslides which include Southern Leyte, Benguet, Mountain Province, Nueva Vizcaya, Kalinga-Apayao, Marinduque, Abra Cebu, Catanduanes and Ifugao.
