Two ships collide off Liloan

LILOAN TOWN - Two passenger-cargo vessels collided here while positioning for berthing space at the Liloan Port Terminal last Monday afternoon.

The Maasin Coast Guard said the vessels MV Ocean King I of Sea Marine Transport and Maharlika II of Philharbor Ferries and Port Services left the Lipata Ferry Terminal in Surigao City for Liloan at around 12 noon.

MV Ocean King which was carrying 47 passengers and Maharlika II which had 150 passengers reached Liloan Ferry Terminal around 4 p.m. according to Chief Petty Officer Michael Romero of the Maasin Coast Guard.

Romero said the two vessels were probably trying to outmaneuver each other for berthing space at the pier when the collision occurred.

The Marine Transport Shipping which owns Ocean King 1 has had a string of mishaps lately with MV Ocean King III having sunk off Benit Port in San Francisco town last year.

In its marine protest MV Ocean King I skipper Leoncio Lamaban 49 said that while approaching Liloan port, Maharlika II’s right side rammed the left side of his vessel causing a gash on each vessel and damaging Maharlika’s passenger ladder. According to Romero no one was hurt in the incident.

The Coast Guard declared the two vessels seaworthy and allowed them to sail back to the Lipata Port in Surigao at 6 a.m. the following day.(By WOWIE REYES)
