Oging vs. Odong

MAASIN CITY - The long awaited rematch between Mayor Maloney Samaco and former Governor Rosette YƱiguez Lerias and Congressman Roger Mercado and Attorney Aniceto Saludo is now a done deal.
And so, it appears, is its outcome. For unless someone jumpstarts the demoralized and fragmented opposition which could not even attract enough candidates to complete its provincial and city slates the Lakas-Kampi team will steam roller its way to victory. This is the first time in the province's history that a major political party has no Vice-Governor or City Vice Mayor on its ticket.
The morale among Lerias-Saludo supporters is so low that one exasperated supporter told SLT:
"We should have chosen our candidates a long time ago. Our leaders can't seem to understand that when the Speaker passed away his followers who owed him favors had gone with him.".
All the opposition alliance has mustered is a rag-tag group of close family friends who have agreed to run simply because they can't say no to their standard bearers.
Ranged against this flimsy organization is the well oiled and well funded political machinery of the Mercado brothers who now appear to have the support of all the 19 mayors of Southern Leyte.
